Chapter 115 – I listened to the hero’s request

“Oh, are you leaving already?”  [Caius]

“You don’t seem to have any ill intentions. Since you’ve given me good love advice, I’m heading back.”  [Youki]

“Is that so? It’s been a while since I’ve had someone I could talk to so openly. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Thank you.”  [Caius]

The vampire thanked me, but I didn’t do much to deserve it. All I did was reveal my true self and talk. If he enjoyed it, then that was great.

“Yeah, see you.”  [Youki]

“Farewell, my fellow kin. I wish for your love to come true… even if it’s love for a human.”  [Caius]

“…Thank you.”  [Youki]

“Hahaha. It’s only natural to wish for the success of those who seek love advice. After all, I am the cupid of love.”  [Caius]

As I was about to leave the room, the vampire snapped his fingers and saw me off. It felt like I would get along well with him.

“Well, now that I’ve accomplished my goal, what should I do?”  [Youki]

I stretched lightly after leaving the supposedly abandoned castle. Since I came to this distant town, I decided to buy some souvenirs for Cecilia and Duke. When I went for a quick tour earlier, I saw a few nice-looking souvenir shops that gave me a few ideas. With a few options in mind, I headed off. It was supposed to be the start of a carefree trip for me, but then…

“We just parted ways! Why am I running into you again?!”  [Youki]

“You don’t have to be so harsh…”

As I was walking through town, heading to the shop I had in mind, I ran into Yuuga again. He didn’t have his usual cheerfulness and energy, probably because of the love consultation earlier.

This guy’s really hung up on it.

“Well, um… I went too far. Sorry.”  [Youki]

It felt cruel to be cold to someone who looked so down. But I immediately regretted showing him any kindness.

“No, it’s fine. I’ll do my best.”  [Yuuga]

“Is that so? Then, good luck.”  [Youki]

“Yeah, I’ll do my best. So, Youki-kun, will you come with me to visit my friend?”  [Yuuga]

“How did you even come to that conclusion!?”  [Youki]

I had no idea how that conversation led to this. It was as though we had skipped a chunk of dialogue and the connection was no longer working correctly.

“After what he said, I looked back on my past. And I realized something. I’ve been living in my own little world all this time.”  [Yuuga]

“Oh, really?”  [Youki]

If he realized that himself, that just shows how much he has grown as a person. He used to live his life without listening to others, recklessly charging ahead on his own. But if that’s the case, I don’t get why he’s asking this favour.

“I want to respect the words and feelings of others from now on. I don’t want to just end things, thinking I’ve saved someone. Was that person truly saved? A self-centered rescue is just self-satisfaction. I’m going to become a true hero.”  [Yuuga]

“I think that’s a noble resolve. It’s something I could never imitate.”  [Youki]

For the time being, I decided to compliment him so I could find an opportunity to slip away.

It was a genuine compliment, I swear! I wasn’t doing it just to escape.

“Thank you. I’m going to turn over a new leaf. To be a new person. So, Youki-kun, I want you to witness the new me.”  [Yuuga]

Unfortunately, my plan failed. Before I knew it, he got hold of my right arm.

Didn’t he just say he’d start listening to others? He has already broken his oath!

Resigned to my fate, I decided to make the best of the situation.

“Sigh, I’ll have to get the souvenirs tomorrow.”  [Youki]

As I was dragged along, I glanced at Yuuga and muttered with a heavy sigh.

♦♦♦

“Shot-kun, about your request – there must have been some mistake. There wasn’t any vampire in that abandoned castle.”  [Yuuga]

“Yuuga, what are you talking about? There’s definitely a vampire there. In fact, my girlfriends were attacked.”  [Shot]

“Then, I’d like to meet these girls who were attacked. I want to confirm if it was the young man I met there.”  [Yuuga]

“W-Well, the girls who were attacked are in shock and currently recovering at a distant monastery.”  [Shot]

When will this back-and-forth end? The place Yuuga led me to was none other than the estate of the local lord. Considering the number of times I went to Cecilia’s place, I was already used to large estates. However, I didn’t expect Yuuga’s friend to be the son of a noble.

That’s a hero for you… even if he doesn’t listen to people. Still, Shot-kun, huh? It seems that they met while this Shot-kun was travelling as the third son in the family. But there’s something suspicious about him. In addition, both of them mentioned ‘girlfriends’ just now. What’s that all about?

“Yuuga, what does he mean by ‘girlfriends’?”  [Youki]

“Hmm? Oh, Shot-kun has several potential brides. He’s probably talking about them.”  [Yuuga]

“What the heck, seriously?”  [Youki]

They say birds of a feather flock together, but these guys are harem buddies? Damn it, he may be a noble’s son, but I’m tempted to throw a punch at him.

“Hey, Yuuga. I’ve been wondering, who’s that guy next to you?”  [Shot]

“Oh, this is Youki-kun. He’s a friend who’s helping me with this request.”  [Yuuga]

“Hey, I never agreed to help!”  [Youki]

Also, I don’t remember becoming your friend… Yeah, I definitely don’t.

“I see, ahem, my apologies. My name is Shot Heimdall. I’m sorry for dragging you all the way here for my personal matters.”  [Shot]

Shot-kun cleared his throat and regained his composure. He even apologized for not recognizing who I was. He looked like a normal person.

“I’m Youki. Just a regular adventurer and I only got dragged into this by Yuuga, so you don’t need to be so formal with me.”  [Youki]

“…I see. You’re an adventurer, huh?”  [Shot]

Suddenly, the way he looked at me changed. Upon learning who I was, his demeanor shifted to one of condescension.

Well, I guess that’s just how nobles like him are. I’d love to have him drink a potion made from Cecilia’s nails – though I definitely wouldn’t actually do that.

“You understand too, right, Youki-kun? Since you also went to that castle. You should know that young man isn’t a vampire.”  [Yuuga]

“Uh, yeah. That’s right.”  [Youki]

Caius is a bona fide vampire. However, for some reason, I can’t fully trust what this guy is saying. That doesn’t mean I can skip out on investigating, though.

“I can’t accept this. Yuuga, I’m disappointed. As my friend, I thought you’d believe my words.”  [Shot]

“It’s not that I’m doubting you. It’s just… that guy isn’t a vampire!”  [Yuuga]

There was no way the argument would be resolved by just throwing their opinions at each other without any solid proof. It was probably best to start over. Continuing this any further would only be a waste of time.

“Hey, let’s head back for now.”  [Youki]

“What? But we haven’t finished talking with Shot-kun yet.”  [Yuuga]

“We’re leaving because that conversation isn’t going anywhere. Let’s go find some evidence that’ll convince him.”  [Youki]

Not that I know if we can actually find any of that. After all, that guy is a vampire. It is easier to convict him than to prove him innocent.

“Yuuga, I’ll be waiting. I know you’ll definitely take down that accursed vampire.”  [Shot]

You can wait all you want then.

I cursed him in my mind as we left the estate.

“I’m exhausted.”  [Youki]

I was downright tired. Shot-kun and Yuuga probably got along well because they were so alike. They both have harems and refuse to listen to others. Although, Yuuga was probably marginally better than him since he wasn’t as obnoxious.

“So, do you think I’ve changed?”  [Yuuga]

“People don’t change that easily, got that?”  [Youki]

“S-Seriously…?”  [Yuuga]

I ignored him and began pondering over what to do next. It was evident that Shot-kun was lying, but I couldn’t figure out how he knew Caius’s real identity. And, although I didn’t press Caius on the matter, I sensed that there was still something hidden in that castle.

“I’m a changed person. I’ll definitely finish this mission and uncover the truth.”  [Yuuga]

“That’s a good attitude. Plus, there’s something that’s been bothering me, so I’ll officially help you out.”  [Youki]

“Really?!”  [Yuuga]

Gone was his dejected face, replaced by a huge smile. The moment I agreed to help, he started beaming happily. I wished he’d save that smile for a girl he likes instead.

“With you around, it’s like having the strength of a hundred men.”  [Yuuga]

“And what are you basing that on?”  [Youki]

“Well, even Raven relies on you, right? And… Cecilia seems to spend a lot of time with you, too.”  [Yuuga]

That was only because of my feelings for Cecilia. I invited her to different places to spend more time with her. However, this wasn’t something that I could admit to a love rival, so I decided to change the subject.

“Uh, I’m no match for a hero who saved the world, though.”  [Youki]

“Um, that sounded forced…”  [Yuuga]

“Anyway, jokes aside… it’s already late, so let’s call it a day. We’ll meet tomorrow at noon at the town entrance.”  [Youki]

“Uh, okay. Got it.”  [Yuuga]

Even though he agreed, he didn’t actually leave. He ended up tagging along behind me and followed me to the same inn. It was a wasted effort to set up a meeting spot. I had initially thought he would stay at a fancy inn, and not a regular one like this. Staying in the same inn would make it easier to meet up, but…

“Separate room, please.”  [Youki]

I told the innkeeper at the reception.

“What? Why?”  [Yuuga]

Yuuga, who was standing beside me, looked discontent.

Why? Come on, figure it out.

“Are you sure?”

“Two rooms, please.”  [Youki]

“Yes, understood.”

This is the one thing I won’t budge.
