Chapter 97 – I defeated the boss of the ghosts with the girl I like
“Then, let’s open it.” [Youki]
“When you open the door, do it carefully. Sometimes, attacks come flying at you out of nowhere.” [Mikana]
“I know.” [Youki]
She didn’t need to tell me that. Even if a knife were to fly at me in that instant, I would be able to catch it.
“…Expectation.” [Happiness]
“What the heck? Let me just tell you in advance that there’ll be no comedic scene that you’re expecting.” [Youki]
I put a damper on Happiness’s excitement. There was no need for a comedic scene here.
“Youki-san, please be careful.” [Cecilia]
“Understand…” [Youki]
I opened the door gently and peeked inside. Beyond the door was a skeleton wearing a crown, sitting proudly on a sofa.
“There’s a bossy-looking skeleton with a crown sitting there.” [Youki]
The skeleton looked like it was practically screaming that it was the boss of that place.
“So it’s an Undead King. It’s rare to find him in a place like this.” [Cecilia]
“A king, huh? Is he strong?” [Youki]
“…A sham.” [Happiness]
“Really?” [Youki]
Was the crown only a decoration?
“The Undead King is an ordinary undead with some wisdom. Its strength is similar to an ordinary undead. There’s not much difference.” [Cecilia]
“It’s a shame, Undead King. You’re unbefitting of your name.” [Youki]
When it comes to battle, I should aim at the crown first. Once it loses that crown, it’ll look like any ordinary undead. I’ll make you the ‘undead king’ for real. Not that I have any grudge against you…
“…What are you scheming?” [Cecilia]
“Cecilia, did you learn mind-reading skill from Sophia-san?” [Youki]
“I’ve recently started to grasp what you’re thinking of.” [Cecilia]
“I wonder if it shows on my face when I’m thinking deeply like this.” [Youki]
I might need to practice my poker face.
“Come on, save the chitchat for later. Shouldn’t we get started?” [Mikana]
“Ah, I’m sorry.” [Cecilia]
“My bad, my bad. Then let me take the lead. Let’s go!” [Youki]
I opened the door with great force. I had confirmed that there were no booby traps set when I looked in earlier, so we could make a grand and flashy entrance.
“W-Wha?”
“Youki’s the name! I’ve come to this mansion to send you, a pitiful undead, who’ve settled here without permission back to heaven!” [Youki]
I faced the Undead King with determination. After spending a long time in this gloomy area, I thought of reigniting my mood.
“…snigger.” [Happiness]
“Heey, intruudeer–!”
Happiness was the only one who reacted to my declaration, albeit in a mocking way while the Undead King called for a back-up.
“Your friends won’t be coming. Cecilia and I have already purified them all.” [Youki]
“Whaat?!”
“What I’m saying is, you’re the only undead left.” [Youki]
“…prepare.” [Happiness]
Happiness and Mikana readied their weapons as well.
“Let’s go too, Youki-san.” [Cecilia]
“You know, I want to go to a town where there are a lot of heroes.” [Youki]
“Please come back to your senses. Look, Mikana and Happiness-chan are preparing to engage the undead.” [Cecilia]
Mikana ignored me entirely, trying not to get involved, while Happiness, on the other hand, went from sniggering to actually saying the word ‘snigger’ out loud.
My switch was flipped for the first time in a while, but it felt like it had been forcibly switched off. These two could be surprisingly malicious when they teamed up.
“All right… let’s do this!” [Cecilia]
If I were to remain in my current mood any longer, Cecilia might flip her other danger switch, so I should pull myself together.
“You’re back. Now, let’s go.” [Cecilia]
“Leave it to me. I’m aiming for that crown.” [Youki]
I activated ‘Lightning Flash’ and swiftly approached the Undead King. My role was to keep the enemy occupied. I could knock it down myself, but using brute force would only make a mess of the mansion. The most efficient approach would be to purify it with Cecilia’s magic. I moved quickly in a feint while keeping the Undead King at bay as it tried to swing a sword adorned with extravagant decorations that didn’t suit its stature. Fortunately, it had no way of landing a hit on me.
“Hmph, your sword has stopped. Is that all you’ve got?” [Youki]
“Daamn it, I miisseed.”
After saying the line I had always wanted to, I seized the opportunity to kick the Undead King, aiming directly for the crown perched atop its head. With precision, my strike connected, causing the crown to soar into the air before landing behind the Undead King.
Now he’s an ordinary undead.
“A-Aaa. Aaaaaaaaaaa!!!!”
“H-Hey!?” [Youki]
The Undead King suddenly cried out loud and threw aside its sword. It then ran towards the crown and picked it up, checking if the crown was okay, and brushing it as though it was removing any dust.
Was the crown that important to it?
“…You’re the worst.” [Happiness]
“Wait, why?” [Youki]
“…savage.” [Happiness]
“Like I said…” [Youki]
“…devil.” [Happiness]
“Explanation, please?!!!” [Youki]
I didn’t know that it was that important. My assumption was that the crown was a mere decoration.
“Okay, okay, quit it with the slapstick routine. Do you guys always end up this way for every guild mission? You never run out of materials, huh?” [Mikana]
It wasn’t like I was doing it because I liked it. But, there were times when it was fun bickering with them like this. Not that I could say this to Happiness, Duke, or Sheik, though.
“…enemy.” [Happiness]
Happiness pointed ahead, gesturing towards the Undead King who was charging towards us with its sword. The crown seemed to be safely perched atop its head once again.
“Hoow daaare you! Hoow daaare you! Hoow daaare you! Hoow daaare you! Hoow daaare you!”
It seemed to be fuming mad. Undoubtedly its target was me. Its jawbone rattled as it approached, giving quite a horror-like sensation.
“My bad about the crown. Come at me, then.” [Youki]
I avoided the approaching Undead King with minimal movement and delivered a kick to the hand holding the sword. This time, the sword flew backward and landed on the ground. Silence dominated the scene, and an atmosphere suggesting the outcome had been decided permeated the air.
“Loost.”
The Undead King sat down quietly on the spot. It took the crown down from its head, gazing at it as if bidding farewell.
“You’re quite an honourable one, huh? You’re not resisting?” [Youki]
“Loost, I haave.”
The Undead King drooped its head.
I hope someone will stop me soon, as my switch is about to flip.
“Cecilia, the undead seems to have accepted its fate. Could you cast Holy Circle?” [Youki]
“Okay, but there is one thing that I would like to ask this undead.” [Cecilia]
“Something you’d like to ask? That’s a demon!” [Mikana]
Déjà vu? The expression on Mikana’s face seemed familiar.
“Why do you keep wearing that crown?” [Cecilia]
“My, my croown, impoortaant. I doon’t know, why. But, impooortaant.”
“Important, is it… Maybe this undead used to be a king somewhere before he passed on.” [Cecilia]
“Hey, Cecilia. Isn’t it enough already?” [Mikana]
“…I understand. It’s important to you, right? If so, I’ll send it with you.” [Cecilia]
Cecilia began pouring magic into her staff. Did it take that long to activate ‘Holy Circle’? Or was she attempting to use a different magic?
“Heaven’s Rondo. An advanced light-attribute magic.” [Cecilia]
A pale light surrounded the Undead King. It was a strange feeling. It sounded like there were sounds around me, but I couldn’t hear it myself. On the other hand, the Undead King seemed to be able to hear it.
“A-Ahh. Nostaalgic feeeling. Sounds, I heaar. Thaat persoons’s…”
The Undead King eventually disappeared, blending into the surroundings. The crown and the sword I had kicked away also vanished at the same time.
“Fuuh…” [Cecilia]
Cecilia lowered her staff and took a deep breath.
An advanced magic, huh? She has been casting ‘Holy Circle’ repeatedly since earlier, so will she be okay using advanced magic now?
“Wait a minute, Cecilia. Why didn’t you use ‘Holy Circle’? You should be able to purify it, right?” [Mikana]
“No, there’s something that I’m concerned about, so I used ‘Heaven’s Rondo’ instead.” [Cecilia]
“That’s a lie. You should be able to cast ‘Holy Circle’…” [Mikana]
“Well, it looks like the undead are gone now, so it’s fine, isn’t it?” [Cecilia]
Cecilia must have something in mind as well. Regardless, the undead were vanquished from the mansion, so the request was completed.
“…achieved?” [Happiness]
“I don’t sense any ominous presence in the mansion, so I’m sure it’s okay now.” [Youki]
“…master (laugh)?” [Happiness]
“No, I just said it in the moment. We’ve defeated the boss, and we’ve checked most of the rooms already. Also, quit it with that.” [Youki]
There was no need for sarcasm.
“True. Details can wait. So, shall we go back?” [Cecilia]
“No, I think it’s still important to confirm. You two can take one last walk around the mansion for the final confirmation.” [Mikana]
“Huh?! If you think so, then why don’t you go?” [Youki]
“…agree.” [Happiness]
“Alright, then the team that did not participate in the boss battle, off you go!!” [Youki]
I waved goodbye as I said sarcastically.
“Ugh… you’re making fun of me, aren’t you? But, it’s true. Fine, I got it. Let’s go. Come on, let’s take a quick walk around.” [Mikana]
“…Understood.” [Happiness]
It seemed that Happiness was conflicted, but she eventually agreed.
“We’ll head back to the carriage first, okay?!” [Youki]
I shouted loud enough for the two of them to hear.
“If you leave before us, I’ll kill you!” [Mikana]
In response, I received a death threat.
How rude. There is no way I’ll actually do that since Cecilia is here.
“Now then, Cecilia. A piggyback ride, a princess carry, or for me to lend you my shoulder. Please have your pick.” [Youki]
“Pardon me, I’ll borrow your shoulder then…” [Cecilia]
Cecilia collapsed onto the ground, looking disoriented. It seemed that even standing was a struggle for her.
“It doesn’t seem possible to lend you my shoulder.” [Youki]
Her complexion wasn’t that bad, but it was probably advisable not to push herself. I gave her water for the time being.
“Here’s the bottle.” [Youki]
“Thank you very much…” [Cecilia]
Cecilia drank the water from the bottle that I handed to her. I hoped she felt better with a little hydration. Having some food might improve her condition a little, but I did not have any with me.
“Are you feeling better?” [Youki]
“Yes, uhh…” [Cecilia]
She tried her best to climb to her feet, but it didn’t appear possible. It didn’t seem like a walking cane would help either.
“Cecilia, a…” [Youki]
A piggyback ride or a princess carry? That was what I wanted to ask, but if I were to carry her on my back… there’d be an issue.
“Alright, let’s go with a princess carry.” [Youki]
“Eh? Youki-san!?” [Cecilia]
Without waiting for Cecilia’s opinion, I scooped her up in a princess carry and dashed towards the exit of the mansion. It was the right decision to come up with an excuse to make the two of them leave. I was concerned about Cecilia, but I didn’t want them to see this.
“Youki-san, this is embarrassing…” [Cecilia]
“It’s no problem. This is the second time now.” [Youki]
I held her in a princess carry once in Dagaz village, Tiel-chan’s hometown.
“Eh? I don’t have any recollection of that!?” [Cecilia]
“That’s because you’ve passed out.” [Youki]
To be precise, I was the one who caused her to pass out.
“Ah!” [Cecilia]
“Does it ring a bell? Sorry for bringing it up all of a sudden. I’m going at full speed now. I don’t want the two of them to see this.” [Youki]
The first time, almost all the villagers in Dagaz village had seen us, but if we were seen by those two people, they would probably make fun of me for some time. As such, I tried to run as fast as I could without causing Cecilia any discomfort.
Thank you!
