Chapter 05: I met a friend and former subordinate (part 4)

Raven couldn’t speak since there were people around while Happiness had fallen asleep by making use of her baggage as a pillow.

The trip had started in the worst possible way.

I threw Raven a look as I pointed at Happiness who was sleeping, implying to him that if he had taken the seat beside her earlier, she might have leaned against his shoulder as she slept instead. However, just when I thought he was hiding his face due to embarrassment, I soon realized that he was actually hanging his head low as he was feeling depressed. He seemed to have regretted the fact that he had not seated beside her earlier.

With such a mood hanging in the air, we soon arrived at our destination, the port town of Frimaire.

“Happiness, get up!” [Youki]

“…Oha.”  [Happiness]

“We’ve reached so we’re getting out. Get your things. You, too, Raven.”  [Youki]

I alighted the carriage with my baggage, and next came Raven with Happiness’s belongings. Was he carrying her items to make amends for not sitting beside her just now? Apparently Raven could be assertive when he needed, too.

After getting out the carriage, we decided to head to the inn first to secure our lodging. Although, since it was our first time here, we had to ask the people around – albeit by myself. Seeing as Happiness could only speak a few words at a time, and Raven couldn’t communicate without his written notes, I couldn’t rely on them in the end.

“The two of you really need to improve on your communication skills.”  [Youki]

“…Sorry.”  [Raven]

“…Reflecting.”  [Happiness]

“Happiness, you don’t just go to a stranger and say ‘…Inn’. How is that person going to understand what you’re trying to ask? And Raven, don’t waste the paper. If you’re going to write the same thing over and over again, just save the notes so you can reuse them.”  [Youki]

I was the one who was usually preached, but I ended up giving them the lecture this time instead. Nevertheless, since we had found the inn, there wasn’t much to say anymore, so we quickly booked our rooms. Naturally we got ourselves two rooms; one room for Happiness and another for Raven and myself. As one might expect, this wasn’t the time for me to be sending any sort of hint to Raven.

We entered our rooms, placed our baggage, and then sat on the bed to rid of our fatigue from the journey.

“Hey, could I ask you this, just in case? Would you have preferred to be in the same room as Happiness?”  [Youki]

“…I can’t answer that question.”  [Raven]

“The answer should be either a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’. Well, that’s the kind of answer I had expected from you, though.”  [Youki]

If someone were to ask me the same question, if I would like to be in the same room as Cecilia, I wouldn’t be able to answer it either.

We are not in that kind of relationship yet, but I’d like to have that kind of relationship with her eventually… it would be quite embarrassing to answer that.

Since I felt the same way, I could understand Raven’s feelings as well.

“…We’ve settled our belongings, so let’s start working on our mission. Happiness and I have not been briefed about it yet.”  [Raven]

“Oh, right. It has completely slipped my mind. I’ll explain it to you two now, so could you get Happiness to come over?”  [Youki]

“…Me? By myself?”  [Raven]

“No, no, no. You can do it, can’t you?” [Youki]

It surprised me to see anxiety in his face. Happiness was the same way today. Neither is the type to express their emotions easily, but they were all over their faces today.

“That’s right… Okay, I’m going.”  [Raven]

“Make sure to knock first before going in.”  [Youki]

“…Don’t paint me with the same brush as Yuuga.” [Raven]

It was an advice Raven did not need.

“I don’t think there’s a need to be that tense, though. He’s just going next door to invite a friend over…”  [Youki]

Even though I was the one who had requested him to go, I started to get really worried. If something were to happen, I would have to be the one to do something about it as Cecilia and Duke were not around.

I have to make sure not to dig my own grave.

“This scheme is seriously haphazard. I wonder if the mission will go well.”  [Youki]

At that moment, I regretted the fact that I did not accept a much simpler mission, like defeating a rampaging demon or something along those lines. The idea was to decrease the gap between the two of them, so I thought at first that I should find a place that would put Happiness in a good mood. If it were a place that she had not been to or seen before, it might improve her mood. This baseless reason was one of the contributing factors. Not to mention, I have not been to a port before, so it would be killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to be memorable; and so, that was how I ended up choosing a mission that does not end with just a mere demon extermination.

“Come to think of it, it might have been a better idea to just accept a simpler mission so they can spend the remaining time to go on dates…”  [Youki]

The time limit was only one week.

It would be great if we could finish the mission within a week and spare some time to create some memorable experiences.

“I must make sure not to spend the entire one week just to complete it. Failure of mission is out of the question.”  [Youki]

The goal is for the two of them to create sweet memories.

I will not allow this trip to end with bitter memories.

The lack of support is quite concerning, but I shall do my best.

“I have to make sure to keep a clear state of mind and try not to disturb them either.”  [Youki]

I will prove that I can be a great wingman just like Duke.

I got hyped up as all these thoughts ran through my mind.
