Chapter 146 – I resolved the problems with the girl I like

After finishing our conversation about Yuuga and Mikana, we fell silent. Today was peaceful; it seemed neither the knights nor the Magic Knight of Black Lightning were needed. That was what I thought until what came next.

“Someone, help! The wood collapsed, and the workers are trapped underneath!”

A desperate cry echoed through Minerva, and without a word, Cecilia and I ran towards the scene. Using body enhancement magic, I removed the wood manually while Cecilia healed the injured. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, and thanks to the quick rescue and treatment, there were no serious injuries either.

“You saved us. Thanks to the two of you, the accident wasn’t worse.”

An older man, probably the foreman, bowed his head in gratitude. The accident was caused by an attempt to speed up the work for efficiency, which led to cutting some corners. Now, the fallen wood was securely fastened, and they had temporarily halted the work.

“We just happened to pass by. Just be more careful next time.”  [Youki]

“There’s only one of you, and magic can’t heal everything completely. Please prioritize safety in your work.”  [Cecilia]

Cecilia and I gently reminded them before leaving the worksite. As we were about to leave, all the workers thanked us. In particular, a group of muscular workers gathered around me, praising my impressive work. Well, I used body enhancement magic, so it wasn’t purely my strength that got the job done. And I wasn’t exactly the type to feel thrilled about being surrounded by many muscular guys, either.

“Haha… it’s nothing, really. But, uh… thanks.”  [Youki]

I could only laugh it off with a dry smile. Meanwhile, Cecilia was surrounded by the workers she had treated, receiving words of gratitude from each of them. She seemed accustomed to situations like these, handling them calmly without any signs of fluster. It made me realize how much more experience she had compared to me. I’d probably have witty remarks if I were in Magic Knight of Black Lightning mode.

“I never expected to encounter an accident scene.”  [Youki]

“Yes, but I’m glad it didn’t turn into something more serious. If we had waited for reinforcements from the knights or medical clinic, some of the workers might have ended up with permanent injuries.”  [Cecilia]

“We really were thanked a lot. They even invited me to have a drink at the tavern sometime.”  [Youki]

“They invited me as well…”  [Cecilia]

Was it okay for a cleric to party at a tavern? It seemed to go against their image. I couldn’t really picture Cecilia drinking boisterously at a tavern.

Hmm, I’m curious about what she’d be like if she got drunk, but I won’t bring it up since we’re not planning to drink. Thinking about alcohol makes my stomach growl –  why now?

The sound of my stomach growling, signalling my hunger, must have reached Cecilia’s ears, too, as she started laughing.

“…Just a little hungry, I guess.”  [Youki]

“It seems so.”  [Cecilia]

“Sometimes, it would be nice to grab some skewers from a street vendor.”  [Youki]

My suggestion was accepted, so I got some skewers, not forgetting to buy one for Cecilia as well. We sat on a public bench with our food and took a break. Taking a bite of the skewer, we entered a little snack time.

“Speaking of… it wasn’t skewers, but Raven and I once had a food fight.”  [Youki]

“How did it come to that?”  [Cecilia]

“Mikana was there too.”  [Youki]

“Now I’m even more confused.”  [Cecilia]

With that bit of reminiscing, our lunch break came to an end. Even just one skewer was sufficient to satisfy a slight hunger. As I wondered what to do next, another scream reached my ears.

“Again!?”  [Youki]

“Let’s go, Youki-san.”  [Cecilia]

Cecilia and I ran towards the source of the scream. This time, it was caused by a fight between adventurers. It made me wonder if they had nothing better to do than to fight in broad daylight. In any case, we had to stop them before anyone else got hurt.

As I hurried to intervene, I noticed someone else trying to break it up. Could it be the Steel Arms of Azure Flame? This person had been keeping a low profile lately, so they may have started acting again.

“What’s your problem, huh!?”

“Get lost if you’re not involved!”

I could hear the adventurers causing the commotion, hurling insults. Curious about the person at the center of it all, I looked over.

“My apologies, but I must ask you to refrain from fighting in front of the shop. My sister and I run this establishment, and it disrupts our customers from fully enjoying their cakes.”

The one politely trying to break up the fight was none other than Andrei, the muscle pastry chef. While dressed in his usual apron, he attempted to resolve the situation through conversation. So, it wasn’t the Steel Arms of Azure Flame after all…

“Youki-san, that person is…”  [Cecilia]

“He’s Andrei, the pastry chef from my favourite cake shop. The fight’s happening right in front of his store.”   [Youki]

I understood his desire to intervene, but would he be okay? Someone had probably gone to call the patrolling knights, so there was no real need to step in personally. If he continued to agitate them, he could end up getting hurt.

“Like I care, you idiot!”

“Get lost, you moron!”

The adventurers’ abusive language didn’t stop.

Are they changing their target to the muscle pâtissier now because he tried to intervene? How do you go from fighting each other to teaming up against someone else?

But the muscle pâtissier didn’t back down. In fact, he seemed ready to take them on.

“I see. You won’t listen, then… in that case!”  [Andrei]

With a determined grunt, the chef’s coat under his apron burst apart. He was now shirtless with just an apron, revealing his sculpted, statuesque physique. Some of the adventurers who had been watching the scene let out a cheer while the women in the crowd screamed in surprise. Andrei, the muscle pâtissier, had become the center of this commotion instead.

“If words won’t get through you, then I have no choice but to use my body to make you understand!”  [Andrei]

As he struck a pose, he advanced on the adventurers who had been causing the ruckus a moment ago, rendering them silent.

“…Youki-san, shouldn’t we stop him?”  [Cecilia]

“We have to stop this, or it’ll be bad. If the knights show up now, they’ll misunderstand the situation.”  [Youki]

At this rate, he would end up getting arrested: A shirtless, muscular man in an apron advancing on two terrified adventurers. It was pretty clear who was the cause of those screams. Well, both of them were causing the screams in their own way.

I decided to step in, and reason with him before this went any further.

“Brother!? What on earth are you doing?”

However, before I could step in, the reliable younger sister, Ami-san, rushed out of the shop. She must have noticed the commotion happening outside.

“Huh? How did this happen? Oh no, the coat’s all torn… and I just had it made! And I can’t believe you’re out here in just an apron with your top half exposed right in front of the store. What about our sanitary image!? Just get back inside and change already!”  [Ami]

“Hmm… but Ami, I haven’t finished communicating with them through my body.”  [Andrei]

“I don’t care about that! Just go inside and change, now!”  [Ami]

Pushed by Ami-san, the muscle pâtissier reluctantly went back inside the shop. The adventurers, the onlookers, Cecilia, and I all stood there, staring silently at the scene.

After finally getting her brother back inside, Ami-san sighed and returned to us.

“Um, I apologize for my brother’s behaviour. The shop is still open for business, so… I’m very sorry for the trouble we’ve caused.”  [Ami]

Ami-san bowed deeply, and there was a moment of silence. But as soon as the silence was broken, the onlookers started rushing into the shop. Even the adventurers who had caused the disturbance joined in.

“W-What?”  [Ami]

Although the sudden flood of customers momentarily confused her, Ami-san quickly regained her composure and headed back into the shop.

“…Shall we go in and get something to eat too?”  [Youki]

“Yes. The knights will probably arrive soon, and we should help explain what happened.”  [Cecilia]
