Chapter 113 – The hero and I received love advice

“…What are you going on about?”  [Yuuga]

Yuuga asked the man with a solemn expression. It was surprising to see that look on his face. The usual troublemaker who constantly caused Mikana to worry was nowhere to be seen. However, the man seemed undeterred by Yuuga’s serious mood. He looked like he’d dodge any question we might throw at him.

From my perspective, if this man is the real deal, then I’d achieve my goal. The question is, how do I deal with Yuuga? He’s still on high alert.

“Haha. Did you not hear me? Then let me say it again. I’m here to listen to your love problems.”  [cupid]

“Youki-kun, what’s he talking about?”  [Yuuga]

“Oh, right. I just remembered – I heard an interesting story from an elderly couple I met on the way here.”  [Youki]

I pretended that it was the first time I’d heard of it. It’d be a hassle if he found out that I came here specifically for love advice.

“An interesting story?”  [Yuuga]

“Yeah. Apparently, there’s a cupid living in this abandoned castle, and if you consult him about your love life, things will go well with the person you’re interested in.”  [Youki]

“Go well, huh? Strictly speaking, that’s not quite accurate.”  [cupid]

“Huh?”  [Youki]

“What I do isn’t anything difficult. I just listen to people’s stories, offer a little advice, and give them courage. Yes, I supported them until they could bravely stand before the door. But it’s up to them to unlock it. What lies beyond the door, even I don’t know.”  [cupid]

He chuckled as he explained his philosophy. Yuuga seemed to have lowered his guard a bit and listened attentively to the man’s explanation.

“By the way, the elderly couple I met also said they had consulted you about their love life.”  [Youki]

“That was probably handled by my predecessor.”  [cupid]

“Predecessor? So, the role of ‘cupid’ is passed down?”  [Yuuga]

It was unknown when Yuuga sheathed his holy sword, but his interest seemed to be piqued upon listening to the man.

“Yeah, that’s right. I’m the sixth generation.”  [cupid]

“Is that really something that gets passed down?”  [Yuuga]

“I’m someone who has inherited the will of my predecessor.”  [cupid]

“Even so, I can’t fully trust you. You know what they say: where there’s no smoke, there’s a fire or something like that.”  [Yuuga]

“There’s no smoke without fire.”  [Youki]

Please use the right phrasing.

“There might be people who don’t think well of me. Bringing people together sometimes earns you resentment.”  [cupid]

Earning resentment over a love consultation? What’s that about?

Yuuga seemed even more puzzled than I was.

“When two people get together, a third party might be left out, right? Sometimes, that leads to grudges and resentment.”  [cupid]

“I see. Love can get messy with things like love triangles and all sorts of complicated situations.”  [Youki]

I’d rather not have such messy obstacles in my relationship with Cecilia.

“In other words, someone came to you for a love consultation, and their relationship succeeded. A third party who was unhappy about the outcome falsely accused you of being a vampire and sent Yuuga after you to get revenge.”  [Youki]

“Youki-kun, you’re suspicious of my friend?”  [Yuuga]

“Well, that’s because…”  [Youki]

“Hahaha, well, calm down. Whether I’m a vampire or not, let’s put that aside. Both of you are in love, aren’t you?”  [cupid]

He said it with absolute confidence that I was taken aback.

“At your age, it would be rare not to be in love. I was just fishing for a reaction. You don’t need to be so surprised.”  [cupid]

“…Even so, you sounded pretty sure of yourself.”  [Youki]

“If someone who’s offering advice spoke hesitantly, wouldn’t that make you uneasy? I make sure to speak with confidence to avoid making those who seek my advice feel anxious.”  [cupid]

He’s hard to figure, which is a bit frustrating. But, it seems that this man is the cupid that I’ve been looking for. It might be a good idea to take this opportunity and get some advice.

“I indeed have someone I like, but…”  [Yuuga]

“First of all, you! Just by looking at you, I can tell… you must be quite popular.”  [cupid]

“He definitely is! It’s so infuriating how popular he is. So much that I’d love to smash a cream pie right into his face.”  [Youki]

“Youki-kun!?”  [Yuuga]

Relax. I wouldn’t waste food for something like this. Besides, if I wasted desserts like that, I’m sure that muscle-bound pastry chef wouldn’t let it slide.

“Hahaha. Exactly, exactly. Judging by your appearance, it’s no surprise that multiple people have feelings for you.”  [cupid]

So, in the end, looks are all that matters? If even the cupid says so, I’m at a loss for what to do.

“A-ahaha, you think so?”  [Yuuga]

Seeing Yuuga so pleased with the compliment gave me the slight urge to strangle him. A man’s jealousy is ugly so I better not dwell on it too much.

“Hmm, you there.”  [cupid]

“Me?” [Youki]

I was startled when he suddenly called me.

“What kind of person does he seem like to you?”  [cupid]

“A harem-making hero who doesn’t listen to others and is overly assertive.”  [Youki]

“Youki-kun!? Isn’t that a bit harsh?”  [Yuuga]

“Shut it. It’s the truth, isn’t it?”  [Youki]

I was only stating the fact. Yuuga could handle a statement like that. Besides, I needed to let the cupid hear the truth.

“Oh, I see, I see…”  [cupid]

“Don’t just accept it like that…”  [Yuuga]

Yuuga looked disappointed at the cupid’s reaction.

Just accept it. If we aren’t honest here, we won’t get accurate advice.

“Ah, my apologies. To be frank, it might be difficult for you to love just one woman.”  [cupid]

“Huh, what? How did it come to that from this conversation?”  [Yuuga]

“Ah, well… how do I put it? Don’t mind.”  [Youki]

I gave Yuuga a comforting pat on the shoulder along with some encouraging words to ease his agitation.

“The fact that you don’t listen to others and that you’re a self-assertive, harem-making hero pretty much sealed the deal.”  [Youki]

“Youki-kun!!”  [Yuuga]

He grabbed me by the collar and shook me roughly, causing my head to spin.

I wish he’d stop that. I’m just stating the truth – I’m not the one at fault here.

“Anyway, let’s hear the details.”  [Youki]

“Ughhhhh~”  [Yuuga]

“Don’t make weird groaning sounds.”  [Youki]

Face reality properly, you’re a hero.

“To explain, it seems that not only do you have good looks, but you seem to bear the title of a hero as well. You likely possess pure combat strength, too. With looks, title, and strength all combined, it’s no wonder women wouldn’t leave you alone.”  [cupid]

“Well, there are exceptions…”  [Youki]

“That’s true. You can never really know what part of a man a woman might fall for. But he does possess the qualities that women typically like.”  [cupid]

Thinking about it in such a logical way felt off-putting. It made me wonder if that was how the majority of the world works.

“Of course, that’s just my opinion. But if he’s assertive and doesn’t listen to others, it’s likely that he’s not exactly smooth when it comes to the women whom he has feelings for.”  [cupid]

“Bingo.”  [Youki]

He chose a tactless accessory for Cecilia, after all.

“That can’t be…”  [Yuuga]

“You have someone you love, yet you have a harem. Maybe you can’t reject the affection directed at you out of kindness, but because of all the mixed signals, you might end up losing sight of the one you should truly love.”  [cupid]

The sound of the now empty wine glass being set down echoed in the room.

“Well, the wine is finished. That wraps up your love consultation.”  [cupid]

“Is there no salvation for me?”  [Yuuga]

I couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him. The whole thing ended on a rather cryptic note.

“Ah, that’s right… If you truly have someone you love, then you need to be prepared. Your choice will bring happiness to some and sadness to others. But it’s best not to rush. Also, don’t just look ahead; take a look around you… or perhaps, in your case, it’s behind you.”  [cupid]

Indeed, in this case, it might be better to look back rather than focus on what’s ahead. There are things he’s overlooked by only looking forward to. Find it.

“All right, it’s my turn next, isn’t it?”  [Youki]

Yuuga seemed to be shocked by the outcome and was lost in thoughts. I decided to ask about mine while he was too distracted to interrupt.

“All right, let’s start with yours. First question. You have someone you like, don’t you? What do you want to happen between you two in the future?”  [cupid]

“What do I want in the future? Well, of course…”  [Youki]

I wanted to convey my feelings and be with her. That was the answer. But for some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud.

“Are you worried about the negative outcomes? Like, if you fail, things might get awkward, and you won’t be able to see each other anymore?”  [cupid]

“Ah… I see.”  [Youki]

I have these kinds of fears deep down in my heart. So that’s why I hesitated to say it out loud.

“You, don’t you find the way things are now to be enjoyable?”  [cupid]

“Huh?”  [Youki]

“You were making snide remarks towards him earlier, but when you heard what I said and saw him feeling down, you were a bit worried about him, weren’t you? Is that just your nature?”  [cupid]

Being observed and analyzed like this was surprisingly embarrassing. His observation power was sharp. That’s the cupid for you.

“Well, I guess that’s about right.”  [Youki]

“But unlike him, you don’t have that aura that makes you popular with women.”  [cupid]

“You’re really blunt!”  [Youki]

Even I’ve received cheers of encouragement from women. Wait, as far back as I can remember, from my past life until now, that’s never happened.

“However, you’re probably well-trusted by your companions and friends. That’s because you value your connections with others.”  [cupid]

“Trusted… am I really?”  [Youki]

Images of my three former subordinates, who always teamed up to tease me, came to mind.

…Yeah, I guess that’s the proof they trust me.

“I don’t know what you’re imagining, but your face went pale. All right, let’s continue. You’re someone who values connections, right? So, the woman you’ve fallen for – you’d surely cherish the time you spend together with her.”  [cupid]

“I already do.”  [Youki]

Drinking the tea that Cecilia made while chatting with her was the most relaxing thing. Lately, I’ve been wishing that time could go on forever.

“That’s it. Because you value your connections so much, you’re afraid that taking action might change your relationship with her.”  [cupid]

“What?!”  [Youki]

“When it comes to confessing, aren’t you finding excuses to keep putting it off?”  [cupid]

“…”

Certainly, I had decided to confess once I reached A-rank.

Now that I think about it, I might be close to advancing from B-rank to A-rank. As Magic Knight of Black Lightning, I’ve taken on an A-rank mission several times already. Clayman might even say it’s about time soon.

“There’s just one thing I can say. Don’t assume that the girl you like will wait for you forever. You might not be the only one thinking about her.”  [cupid]
