Chapter 120 – I fulfilled the hero’s request

“Eh, you’re going back!?”  [Yuuga]

After the commotion at Shot-kun’s mansion ended, I started packing in my room at the inn, preparing to return to Minerva at a leisurely pace. However, as usual, the rude hero who never attempted to knock suddenly barged in. The moment he saw me, that was the very first thing that he said.

“Of course. Caius will take care of Shot-kun’s problem, and I’ve already finished my business and done plenty of sightseeing.”  [Youki]

“What will happen to Shot-kun?!”  [Yuuga]

“Well, Caius’s misunderstanding has been cleared up. The rest will work itself out.”  [Youki]

Caius’s two hundred years of love experience wasn’t just for show, so it should be a snap for him to handle someone like Shot-kun.

“You really think so?”  [Yuuga]

“You’re busy too, right? It’d be better to go back and take care of what you need to do. Even if you have extra time off, go learn some common sense and conversation skills from someone.”  [Youki]

Having experienced this incident, I understood the struggles faced by Cecilia and the others during their journey. In short, this person should be sent to places such as a monastery. At the very least, he should be assigned a tutor. Someone like Sophia-san would be a good fit to whip him into shape if she would even agree to it in the first place.

“T-That’s true. I might’ve just been following Youki-kun’s instructions even though the request was started by me…”  [Yuuga]

“Well, you did gather information properly, so don’t be so down about it.”  [Youki]

I comforted the dejected Yuuga as I gently patted his back. As I did so, I couldn’t help but wonder if he was really a hero – A sensible demon was trying to cheer up a crestfallen hero. It felt like I could envision a double scolding coming from Cecilia and Duke at that moment.

“Ugh, thanks… I’ve decided – I’ll go back tomorrow too. I need to reflect on my mistake. I was almost used.”  [Yuuga]

“Sounds good. How you make good use of your free time is up to you, though.”  [Youki]

“Yeah, I’ll go pack my things.”  [Yuuga]

He was just as whimsical as ever. Yuuga seemed like the type who would act immediately once he had made up his mind. Thanks to that, the room returned to its former quietness, and I could finally focus on my packing.

“Come to think of it, I haven’t stopped by Gram-san’s place yet.”  [Youki]

He did tell me where his house was, so it would be a shame to waste the connection we formed. I decided to go say goodbye before heading back to Minerva.

I stopped packing for a moment as I recalled the directions he gave me before heading towards his house.

♦♦♦

“This must be the place.”  [Youki]

It was a house located a little outside of town. A field could be seen in the area, and judging by the hunting tools leaning against the wall, I assumed they did hunting as well. From what I heard during the carriage trip, this should be Orie-san’s family house. Their sons were the ones who took over the family business in the end. On the other hand, Gram-san and Orie-san happily enjoyed their carefree retirement together. They were recounting it happily in the carriage the other day.

Honestly, it sounds like the ideal way to spend one’s later years.

“E-Excuse me!”  [Youki]

I knocked on the door and waited for a response.

Suddenly, the door swung open, and Gram-san showed up with a hoe.

“I-I won’t let anyone take our dear grandchild… Hm?”  [Gram]

“Ah, ahaha…”  [Youki]

The sheer intensity made me lean back a bit in reflex while Gram-san just looked at me in confusion. It was unexpected to be greeted by the homeowner with a hoe right after knocking so despite the awkward smile on my face, I was even more baffled than he was.

“Oh, Gram, don’t go answering the door without checking who it is first… Oh my, it’s Youki-kun! Look, Gram, Youki-kun has come to visit!”  [Orie]

“Oh, it’s Youki-kun! My apologies for startling you. Come on in.”  [Gram]

“E-Excuse me for intruding.”  [Youki]

The elderly couple guided me inside. After being shown to a room and sitting down, I decided to ask about the incident earlier.

“Um, why were you holding a hoe?”  [Youki]

“Sorry about that. Actually, yesterday, a foolish… well, some bad people tried to abduct our dear granddaughter.”  [Gram]

“You can stop right there. It’s already too late.”  [Orie]

“Our granddaughter is somewhat acquainted with the lord’s son, you see. Gram used to work there for a while, managing the lord’s garden.”  [Orie]

“You just gave away the whole story, didn’t you?”  [Gram]

I sipped the tea prepared by Orie-san as I listened to the story.

It seems that the girl Shot-kun is interested in has no noble connections. When Gram-san was working as the lord’s gardener, he would bring her along to play.

“I just brought her along because she enjoys working with the soil, that’s all.”  [Gram]

Never did he imagine that his granddaughter would become friends with Shot-kun.

“When we think of our granddaughter’s happiness, we… We went through tough times, but we were able to be with the person we love. So, we want the same for our granddaughter. But Gram has seen the lord’s son surrounded by multiple cute girls many times, you know?”  [Orie]

It seemed that Gram-san had witnessed pretty damning behaviour, much to Shot-kun’s disadvantage. Hopefully, he would be okay.

The conversation after that pretty much centered around their granddaughter. I listened to them proudly speaking about her for a while before deciding to take my leave.

“Feel free to drop by anytime you’re nearby. We might not be able to offer much, but you’re always welcome.”  [Orie]

“Y-Yes. Umm, please don’t worry about it…”  [Youki]

“Take care on your way back, all right?”  [Gram]

After being warmly seen off by the kind elderly couple, I returned to the inn and resumed packing.

“Oh, the souvenirs…”  [Youki]

I recalled something I missed out midway through packing, so I rushed around the town’s souvenir shops, which became a fond memory in itself. After getting what I wanted, I heaved a sigh of relief.

All that’s left is to catch the shared carriage back to Minerva tomorrow.

♦♦♦

“…That’s what I thought last night!”  [Youki]

“Eh? What’s wrong?”

“Why are you sitting next to me so casually?”  [Youki]

There was Yuuga, sitting beside me with his luggage in hand.

“Was that a problem? If it’s the luggage, I can put it in the empty seat next to me.”  [Yuuga]

“That’s not the issue! Why are you with me!?”  [Youki]

I couldn’t understand why he was riding in the same carriage as me. As a hero, he should have travelled in his own private carriage.

“Well, I was originally invited by Shot-kun, so I was supposed to get a ride back in his carriage, but I turned it down. I figured, might as well enjoy the journey home, right?”  [Yuuga]

“Aaaaah…”  [Youki]

While Yuuga was smiling brightly, I covered my face with both hands in despair. For the past few days, I was forced to endure the overflowing positivity and energy coming from Yuuga, but I realized that this would last until my trip back to Minerva.

“So… tired.”  [Youki]

When the carriage finally arrived in Minerva, I immediately bade Yuuga farewell and ran away as soon as I got off. Even though Breitling was a rural town, he didn’t even bother to disguise himself further proving the point that his knack for causing trouble was as strong as ever. I decided that it would be best to leave before getting surrounded by people.

“Ah, I’m so tired… but, I still want to see her.”  [Youki]

To alleviate the discomfort I felt from being surrounded by men throughout this trip, I headed towards the Aquarain family mansion as I clutched the souvenir in hand. I knew that the kind of comfort I was seeking couldn’t be found in my sleep.

“Sophia-san, it’s been a while.”  [Youki]

As I approached the gate, I encountered Sophia-san, who was in the middle of cleaning the entrance area.

“It’s been a while, Youki-sama.”  [Sophia]

“I apologize for the sudden visit, but is Cecilia around?”  [Youki]

“Yes. Young mistress is currently enjoying her day off in the mansion.”  [Sophia]

“Um… Would it be possible to see her?”  [Youki]

I was aware that it was incredibly rude to try to meet her without prior notice, but the overwhelming desire to see her overtook me.

“…Please wait a moment while I confirm with young mistress.”  [Sophia]

I decided to wait, as instructed. As I made small talk with the gatekeeper, who always took care of me, Sophia-san returned.

“Young mistress said it’s all right to let you in.”  [Sophia]

“Ah, e-excuse me.”  [Youki]

“That’s quite a lot of luggage. Are you going somewhere?”  [Sophia]

“It’s the opposite. I just got back.”  [Youki]

“Was it for a guild request?”  [Sophia]

Her question made me pause for a moment. It wasn’t a guild business, but I was reluctant to tell her that I travelled so far just for a love consultation.

“I was on a relaxation trip.”  [Youki]

I chose what I thought to be the safest answer, but…

“…You look quite exhausted for someone who just went for a relaxation trip.”  [Sophia]

“…”

I couldn’t come up with a reply.
